This Was Never Really a Mommy Blog
If I’m honest with myself and honest with you, I have to admit the following …
This was never really a mommy blog, now was it?
This was never really an expat blog, now was it?
This was never really an adoption blog, now was it?
Well, I’m not just a mommy.
I was someone before I had kids. I was an educated, somewhat crazy artistic person who had outside interests, and sometimes even smart thoughts that did not revolve around poop, pee-pees or the joy of white crayon on black paper (“See! Mommy! The white crayon does work, you. were. wrong!”)
It’s just that the reason that we moved to Serbia was because we had/have little kids … hence the “expat” idea.
“Expat” is classist and elitist just the way I like it
Expatriate, ex-pat, and then expat … these are the terms-of-art for “people like me,” or so I thought.
I explored this question in my post Expat versus Immigrant. Thoughts on Terminology, and now I figure that perhaps I’m just an immigrant, or a prolonged tourist, or a woman-who-married-a-Serb-and-now-lives-here-with-him-and-their-little-kids. That makes for a really long blog tagline.
This is an adoption blog (kind of)
Yeah, I’ll give you that.
But I don’t always write about adoption, and more importantly, I don’t want my “adoptee status” to define every single thing about me. Plus, it’s not like I’m running around with a white hankie shouting about how grrrrreat adoption is. If anything, this is a blog that advocates for family preservation as a matter of social justice for humans.
So what IS this blog about, then?
Excellent question.
I’m not exactly sure, but I know what I’d like it to be about. It’s the same things I’d like to have going on in my non-blogging life. Things like
Clarity.
Creativity.
Self-examination. No. Not of the breast exam kind, although that’s important, too.
Being creative and fog-free in understanding oneself and one’s relationships.
Teaching my kids all of this stuff.
Yes, that’s it.
Finding compassion for other, and for ourselves.*
Recognizing that we’re all traipsing through life, we’re all flawed and we’re all loveable.
Now if I could just get that into three witty, search-engine-optimized words …
Hey, a gal can dream, right?
I'm with you. I have many different interests and aspects to my persona, but search engines and some readers like focus for a blog — one box, one subject, one area of expertise. That's not me. And if it hurts my World Wide Web image, well, too bad. I say, carry on, Laura!
You bring up a good question. Can you have a niche and also be a general diarist at the same time?
I was on a panel at BlogHer last year and we talked about having both. I think you do it well, which is what keeps me coming back.
(Notes from the panel: http://bit.ly//myblognolongerfitsme )
I don't care what you write about, as long as you KEEP ON WRITING!

There is nothing better than a mother’s love in this world and you have been trying to explain the same thing. Your posts are always worth of reading them because they touch the heart.
